and then left and came back moments later to shoot him again. his weapon of choice, it's that .223 caliber assault rifle. >> and hernandez. his wife is just devastated. >> he was a wonderful husband, father, son, and friend. he would have been 40 next week. i am truly devastated and we are all heartbroken and will miss him dearly. >> paul ciancia is in the hospital now and was shot in the chest. he faces two charges. >> terminal three at l.a.x., by the way, is open this morning.

>> reporter: investigators are still piecing together their timeline of what happened inside terminal 3. they don't know every step of paul ciancia's path through the terminal. a roommate dropped him off at the airport and he entered at about 9:20 in the morning, one of these entrances at terminal 3. according to pictures like this one or surveillance video, the gun was a .223 caliber assault rifle which he concealed in a bag. hernandez was standing there, and this is a prescreening area, and he shot him pointblank multiple times in the chest and then got on the escalator. >> the defendant is then alleged to have begun walking away from the wounded tsa officer going up an escalator, and then coming back down that escalator to return and shoot the wounded

officer again. >> reporter: at the top of the escalators is a security check point and then he wounded two additional officers and one passenger. this is the other side of the security check point. from here the gunman made his way deep into terminal 3. cell phone video captured the chaos as he neared the passenger gates. >> people were running and getting knocked down. there was luggage everywhere, and mayhem. >> we are speeding up the video as you can see the path and he wound up the terminal. >> reporter: he had five loaded magazines, enough to kill everybody in the terminal said the mayor of los angeles it ended right here where the police shot the gunman and a hand-written note was found on him. >> he found a statement where he made a conscious decision to

kill multiple tsa employees. he addressed them at one point in the letter that he wanted to, quote, instill fear in their tradious minds. >> obviously this gives us great concern, so we will look at what our policies are and it's all done in cooperation with each airport police agency and how we go about providing for the best possible security. >> reporter: because on this day at america's third busiest airport it failed to prevent one man with a gun from doing this. >> we heard from the fbi spokesperson about the documents he had on him and investigators are also looking into policy yawn see's past.

and a disturbing message he sent to his family before the shooting. >> yeah, and we have more outside the family's home in new jersey. >> reporter: police are still here at the family's home in new jersey as investigators try to piece this thing together looking for any sort of clue that may give them some idea of what the motivation was and something to piece the shooting together. one of the things that will make it difficult is from talking to people that knew the family and people in the area, and paul ciancia did not have a lot of close friends here. he just left the area about 18 months ago, and spent his entire life here and yet it was very hard to find anybody that could say they knew him well. he went to high school at an all-boys catholic school just over the bridge in delaware, and there are some reports of some ex-students there who said he was quiet and spent a lot of

time to himself and other reports say he was bullied, and we have not verified that. i think what is key is they are going to look at what happened to drive those alarming angry text messages that he sent here to his family. victor, kristi? >> airports in and around new york are stepping up the shooting, and the police patrols and newark airports and check points, too are set up. passengers should check with their airlines for delays. and then authorities are urging students at the greensboro campus, just stay inside. this is for your own safety. a student was shot and injured last night. police say they are looking right now for four suspects.

done so much, visiting them in hospitals, and they did it just to show simple support, and for them to sing "god bless america," and that was a really poignant moment. the police chief said there was not a single incident. you had the weather smiling down on the parade. 70 degrees in boston in november, and hospitals did not report any serious incidents and the city and the people and the red sox everybody handled themselves amazingly. a lot of people were made happy yesterday in the city of boston because of what happened. >> parade organizers said they were going to be a tribute at the end but not giving details, but this had the perfect tone, just perfect. still to come, two skydiving planes collide in midair. >> how both pilots are doing this morning and what may be to blame for that mishap. leave of absence from coaching for at least several weeks, and fox sought medical help after feeling light-headed. he did not, though, have a heart attack. an assistant college coach died after being shot outside a movie theater in joplin, missouri. this was his third year at the university. the shooting suspect is in jail and school officials cancelled all homecoming plans in the wake of his murder. and then trying to figure out why a pair of claims, both carrying sky divers, mind you, collided in midair. the aircrafts hit each other and one of the planes lost its wings and bursts into flames and the pilot was able to jump out. only minor injuries reported.

and then the new york city marathon. 47,000 runners expected to compete. officials have beefed up security. bomb-sniffing dogs and scuba divers and backpacks are banned. and then paul ciancia shot a tsa officer at pointblank range and then went up the escalator and then came back down to shoot the tsa officer again. >> paul ciancia now faces two charges of murder of a federal officer and commission of violence at an international airport. >> in the meantime, life is returning to normal, i guess, at the airport. but for the victim's family, you know nothing will ever be the same for them.

>> reporter: here at l.a.x., hernandez says her husband leaves behind two young children. he was her high school sweetheart. he was born in el salvador and came here to the united states when he was 15 years old and by every measure he was living the american dream. she says he joined the tsa in 2010 and was filled with pride protecting america's passenger planes. >> he was a wonderful husband, father, brother, son, and friend. gerardo would have been 40 next week. i am truly devastated. we are all heartbroken and will miss him dearly. >> here the tsa officers are wearing black bands around their badges. it's a sign of mourning for their fallen officer as far as

new details we want to share with you on the attack of the los angeles national airport and how it went down. >> 23-year-old paul ciancia shot a tsa officer at pointblank range and then he left, but then he came back moments later to shoot him again. his weapon of choice from smith & wessen, a .2223 caliber m & p 15 assault rifle. >> and the tsa officer that was killed, his wife is devastated. >> he would have been 40 next week. i am truly devastated. we are all hard broken and will miss him dearly. >> paul ciancia was shot in the

chest and is in the hospital. he faces two charges. >> we know terminal three at l.a.x. is open this morning, and we went there to walk through how this deadly rampage was executed. >> the investigators are piecing together their timeline of what happened inside of terminal 3. here is what they do know. a roommate dropped him off here at the airport. he entered at about 9:20 in the morning, and one of these entrances at terminal 3. and a picture like this one and surveillance video, the gun was a .223 assault rifle. he approached gerardo hernandez in the prescreening area and shot him pointblank multiple times in the chest, and then he got on the escalator.

the mayor, to kill all the people in the airport. a handwritten note was found on him. >> we found a statement where he made a conscious decision to kill multiple tsa employees. he addressed them at one point in the letter and stated that he wanted to, quote, instill feel in their traderous minds. >> the tsa is asking how in the post 9/11 era, did a gunman make it this close to an airline passenger plane? >> it's of great concern, and we will look at what our policies are, and it's all done in cooperation with each airport and police agency and how we go about providing for the best possible security. >> because on this day in america's third busiest airport, it failed to prevent one man with a gun from doing this.

cnn, los angeles >> you know investigators are looking into paul ciancia's past, and the disturbing message he sent to his family before the shooting. police are investigating at his home in new jersey, and he left that area to move to l.a. about 18 months ago, and it seems not a lot of people knew him well. we know he went to an all boys catholic high school and classmates say he was quiet and kept to himself and he may have been bullied. it's race day in new york. in less than two hours, runners will take part in the new york city marathon. security is expected to be tighter than usual. tell us more about some of these unprecedented security measures. >> reporter: well, victor, the plan to make this a safer event and an even safer event started on the day after the boston

marathon bombings, and every since new york city police have been doing everything they can to keep the runners and spectators safe. there are hundreds of cameras along the route, and they will be monitored live, and scuba divers swept the shoreline, and spectators who are coming out to witness this great event in the city are also being told that they need to prepare for extra security, and they could be subject to random searches. new york city's police commission, ray kelly, said everything can be done to keep the runners and spectators safe. here is what he said. >> i think this will be the best protected race that, you know, they can enter. no guarantees in the post 9/11

certainly. a provision requires some businesses with 50 or more employees to provide insurance for birth control or pay a substantial fine. this appeals court struck it down for now. the court rules the company that brought the suit could not be forced to provide birth control. the company's other choice if they did not was to pay a $14 million fine. the key is the owners of the company are of the catholic faith and objected on religious grounds. the suit was filed in the name of the company and the company cannot express religious beliefs. so the court addressed that, but in the 2-1 decision, the court said forcing the owners to provide this kind of coverage would challenge their religious beliefs, so for now they struck it down in the federal court and are allowing the suit to proceed to challenge that coverage mandate. >> we have this ruling from this

is in serious condition after a fall. he fell from the spinning apparatus called "the wheel of death." >> remember back in june a performer fell nearly 100 feet to her death after her safety wire broke. investigators in wisconsin are trying to figure out why a pair of planes, both of them carrying sky divers collided in midair. the sky divers were getting ready for a formation jump after the planes hit each other. one plane burst into flames, but the pilot was able to get out. and then we're talking about this rare solar eclipse that lasted two minutes at sunrise this morning, and people living along the east coast they were able to seat partial eclipse, which looked like a half moon.
